Our God is great in every way. He is the creator and sustainer of a universe so big we cannot comprehend its size. His work is so detailed that He designed our whole DNA, cellular, and atomic realities.
He said His name is simply, “I Am.” He has always been and always will be. He is love, He is light, He is holy, He is good, He is wise, He is powerful. He does not have to try to be…He simply is. At times I have to fight against habits, sin, or demons to do what I know I should. God never struggles with trying because He is. I don’t have to try to have blue eyes, I simply have them. I don’t have to consciously try to have bones; they are part of who I am. And God never has to try to be who He says He is. And this God has purposes and plans for you. And His plans for you are consistent with His loving, holy, brilliant nature.
God’s Purposes are Greater than we Know
That means that God’s purposes are bigger, better, higher, and deeper than any human could ever come up with. I think the case can be made that God’s number-one reason for creating you is to progressively fill you with divine, abundant, eternal life. All human beings have physical, emotional, and mental lives; but only those connected with the Creator have divine life filling, forming, and flowing out of their spirit and soul. God does not want you to taste a little bit of this life; He wants to fill you to overflowing with it (Ephesians 3:20).
Though it certainly impacts our bodies, and sometimes even heals them, and although God promises to meet at a minimum our need for food, clothing, and shelter, those are secondary, temporal things. God wants to give us far more and far better than that. There are literally thousands of God-initiated, ,God-given promises in the Bible. And 2 Corinthians 1:20 tells us that the promises given to all believers are God’s will for each one of us; they are all “yes” in Christ.
All of These Benefits and Purposes in One Spot
I want to give you just one section of Scripture. It is packed with powerful truths and spiritual realities. I encourage you to read it slowly and let the words rinse over your soul. And remember this is but one very thin slice in the “pie” of God’s promises.
“And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them” (Ephesians 2:1-11).
We go from spiritual death, from living under the dominance of darkness, dominated by lusts, children of wrath to:
- Receiving God’s great love and mercy
- Being made alive with Christ
- Saved by grace
- Raised up with Christ
- Seated with Christ in the heavenly places
- A future eternity of receiving the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness
- Salvation as a gift
- Being God’s handcrafted workmanship
- Stepping into God-ordained, purpose fulfilling works which God prepared ahead of time for us to walk in
It’s for You!
All of that is for every single Jesus follower. And I remind you again, this is but one paragraph in hundreds of pages of New Testament promises given to us. Receiving these realities, these promises impart to our soul, our inner person, the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4). And there is no level of life higher than the one our God has.
